When Billy additionally mentions Emmetts car, the other tramps start hassling Emmett, and Ulysses has to intimidate them into leaving. He gets Harry's former address from his agency. The farmer sees Ulysses, but declines to let him into the shelter. As Dennis yells about needing to catch the 6:42 train each morning, Woolly had realized that his boarding schools had been designed to train them to become adults who had every-day days as well. The Lincoln Highway has little to do with an actual highway, aside from the fact that the main characters of the novel are on a journey. Duchess is certain that Emmett is saying no only because he made the proposition in front of Billy. When Emmett declines, Duchess "borrows" Emmett's car, forcing Emmet and Billy to stowaway on a train to New York to find Duchess and Woolly and reclaim it. So the brothers take their share of the money and plan to finally go to California. Not long after, World War II had started. So again, while I dont think Emmett set out to murder Duchess, I also believe he didnt care what happened to himhe just didnt want to deal with his toxic behavior any longer.
